ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was unable to pick up another set from Shepherd after winning the first game in a four-set loss Friday night in a Mountain East Conference match.
CU (4-19, 1-7 MEC) won the first set 25-21 before the Rams (17-5, 6-2 MEC) won the next three games 25-13, 25-15, 25-23.
After opening up an 8-4 lead to start the match, Concord watched Shepherd go on an 8-0 run as the Rams grabbed a 12-8 edge. With SU still maintaining a four-point lead, 19-15, the Mountain Lions made their move. Concord scored five straight points to gain a 20-19 lead in the set as four different players recorded kills. Shepherd scored the next point to tie the set at 20-20, but CU ran off the next four points as freshman right side

Imani Rodgers added an ace. The 24-20 lead was enough for CU to win the first set.
The Rams pulled away late in the second set to even up the match at 1-1. After trailing by as much as five points, 11-6, early in the set, a kill from senior middle hitter
Brooke Heck brought the Mountain Lions back to within 13-11 of SU, but the Rams finished the set on a 12-2 spurt.
In the third game, Shepherd ran out to a 15-7 edge, and the Mountain Lions were unable to get closer than seven points over the remainder of the set.
CU made a run at the end of the fourth set, but was unable to force a fifth set in the match. Concord's only lead of the fourth game was 1-0. Down 23-17 late in the set, senior outside hitter
Alexi Pranckus provided a service ace while Huber and Lawrence came up with blocks to get the Mountain Lions to within 24-23 of the Rams, but Shepherd scored the final point of the match.
Heck went for a team-best 14 kills as she hit .565 in the match. The Huntington, West Virginia native added six blocks in the match. Huber and Lawrence each went for eight kills with Huber also tallying five blocks.

Erin Shannon notched a match-high 19 digs.
The Mountain Lions continue their home stand with a 1:00 p.m. match Saturday against Fairmont Statsse.
