Concord Loses to Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Fairmont State Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

CU (4-20, 1-8 MEC) won the second set 25-19 after losing the first 25-20, but was unable to carry the momentum the rest of the match as Fairmont State (9-12, 4-5 MEC) took the final two games 25-9 and 25-16.

Neither team led by more than two points in the opening set until FSU rattled off four straight points at 19-17 to open up a six-point advantage. Junior setter Jenna Mounts pulled Concord back to within 23-18 after a kill, but the Mountain Lions was unable to get any closer in the first game.

The Maroon and Gray opened up an early 9-4 lead in the second game and held off WVSU in the set to even up the match. The early spurt was sparked by two kills from senior outside hitter Ellie Lawrence. Fairmont State closed to within one point of CU three different times in the set, but with the score 19-18 Concord recorded four consecutive points to hold off the Fighting Falcons. Senior middle hitter Brooke Heck and Lawrence each had a kill to shut down the FSU comeback attempt.

Fairmont State started the third game on a 13-4 run and cruised in to a 2-1 lead in the match.

CU and Fairmont State began the fourth set deadlocked at 6-6, but the Fighting Falcons went on a 6-1 run to open up a 12-7 edge. Concord  could not get any closer than five points in the remainder of the game.

Heck and Lawrence each had eight kills in the contest. Mounts (18 assists) and freshman setter Imani Rodgers (14 assists) combined for 32 assists.

Freshman right side Camryn Huber added five kills and nine total blocks. It was part of a 14-block match for the Mountain Lions which were a season high.

Concord continues its home stand against Glenville State 7:00 p.m. Friday. It will be Senior Night for Heck, Lawrence and outside hitter Alexi Pranckus.
