Concord Makes Road Trip to Wheeling Jesuit, West Liberty

ATHENS, W.Va. - Coming off a 70-59 win over rival Bluefield State Monday night, the Concord University men's basketball team continues its three-game road swing when it visits Wheeling Jesuit 7:30 p.m. Thursday before staying in the northern panhandle to face West Liberty 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 11-9 overall and have an even 7-7 record in the Mountain East Conference.

Wheeling Jesuit is 16-4 overall after winning a non-conference game over Salem International Monday, and the Cardinals are 11-3 in the conference.

Fresh off its first loss of the season, West Liberty checks in at number five in the NABC Division II poll with an 18-1 record and 13-1 mark against MEC foes.

STRINGING TOGETHER STOPS
During the victory over Bluefield State, the Mountain Lions kept BSC in check in the crucial moments of the game.

Down 56-53 with 7:11 remaining, CU did not allow a made field goal by Bluefield State over the remainder of the contest.

It marked the third straight game in which Concord did not allow a made shot for five or more minutes.

Against Wesleyan at home, the Maroon and Gray stymied the Bobcats for 6:21 between field goals in the opening minutes of the second half.

At Glenville State, the Pioneers went 5:03 without a make from the field.

Additionally, the Mountain Lions have excelled on the defensive end in the second halves of games over the last three.

In those games, teams are shooting 39.1 percent (38-for-97) from the field in the first half as opposed to 32.2 percent (30-for-93) in the second half.

RARE AIR
At Bluefield State, Bolte went over 500 points for the season by scoring 27 points.

The Chillicothe, Ohio native is also approaching 100 rebounds (91), 100 assists (96) and 50 steals (37) for the season.

The only other player in program history to have 500 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals in the same season was Kelly Mann who did it in back-to-back seasons (1996-97, 1997-98).

Bolte continues to lead Division II in scoring at 29.9 points per game and also paces the MEC in steals per game with 2.1 per contest.

Additionally, the nation's leading scorer is approaching 1,000 points for his career.

Bolte will start the weekend with 900 points in his time in the Maroon and Gray.

TEAM WORK
Concord carries a six-game streak of outrebounding its opponent into the weekend.

At Bluefield State, sophomore forward Trey Brisco notched his second career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.

In those six games, CU has a rebounding margin of +14.0 (48.8-34.8).

But for the Mountain Lions it has been a group effort on the glass with four players grabbing an average of five or more rebounds per contest in the last six contests.

Freshman forward Jyles Webster leads the group at 9.2.

Brisco is second at 8.3 rebounds per game followed by Bolte (7.3) and freshman guard Darian Peterson (5.3).

PHOTO FINISH
Over the last 10 meetings between Concord and Wheeling Jesuit, six games have been decided by six points or less with two of those games going to overtime.

Despite the close calls, the Mountain Lions haven't defeated WJU since the 2014-15 regular season at the Carter Center, an 84-80 win.

Earlier this season, CU dropped a 69-67 decision as Wheeling Jesuit hit a jumper with 42 seconds left to take the lead for good.

Last season on the road, Concord lost 83-80 as Wheeling Jesuit denied the Mountain Lions a chance to take a late lead with four seconds remaining in the game. I

n his last three games versus the Cardinals, Bolte is averaging 16.6 points per game including 23 points earlier this season.

FINDING THE TOUCH
Earlier this month, senior guard B.J. Hamlet went for a career-high 38 points on 14-for-21 shooting and made eight three-pointers versus West Liberty.

Hamlet scored 19 points in each half, and in his career Hamlet has knocked down 24 three-pointers in seven career games against the Hilltoppers.

Furthermore, the Roanoke, Virginia native has poured in an average of 16.5 points per game versus WLU, 8.5 points better than his career average.

GETTING SHARPER
As previously mentioned, CU's defense has gotten stronger throughout games recently, but the offensive numbers have spiked for the Mountain Lions in the second half well.

Of the last six games, Concord has shot 50 percent or better in the second half in four of those contests including a 51.8 percent performance in the final 20 minutes at Bluefield State.

Overall, Concord has shot 47.4 percent (93-for-196) in the second half during the last six games.

8- National ranking for CU's three-point field goal defense, allowing 30.2 percent  from three-point range.

12- Combined lead changes and ties between Concord and WJU earlier this season.

25- Combined made three-pointers by Concord and West Liberty when the teams met earlier this season.

WHEELING JESUIT AT A GLANCE
The Cardinals had been ranked all season in the NABC Division II poll, but fell out this week after an upset loss on the road to Shepherd.

The only loss Wheeling Jesuit has at home this season is to their crosstown rival, West Liberty.

Haywood Highsmith is the only player in the MEC averaging a double-double this season. The senior is averaging 22.3 points and 12.6 rebounds per contest. His rebounding numbers lead all of Division II.

Pat Moseh (17.4 points) and Preston Boswell (17.0 points) are in the top 10 in the conference in scoring.

WEST LIBERTY AT A GLANCE
WLU relinquished the number one national ranking with a narrow 98-97 lost at Fairmont State that snapped an 18-game winning streak for the Hilltoppers.

Averaging 110.2 points per game, West Liberty is the highest scoring team in Division II, and has five players averaging double figures led by Dan Monteroso with 19.5 points per game.

Dalton Bolon is scoring 16.5 points per game and is the leading rebounder for the Hilltoppers with 5.6 rebounds per contest.
