Concord Rolls By Bluefield State, 89-63

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team had three players finish with double-doubles in its 89-63 win over Bluefield State Monday night at Ned Shott Gymnasium.

After holding a 39-30 halftime lead against Bluefield State (2-21), CU (11-8) immediately ran its lead up to 14 points with five quick points to start the third quarter. Freshman forward Riley Fitzwater had an offensive putback and senior guard Danielle Catron followed with one of her five three-pointers in the game on the next possession.

But the pesky Blues would not go away quietly as they answered with six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 46-36 with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter. However, Catron scored seven points, senior forward Heather Chapman pitched in an old-school three-point play and senior guard Lindsey Overbey added a layup during a 12-0 run for the Mountain Lions.

After building the 22-point lead, Bluefield State was able to get within 13 points, 71-58, with 5:22 left in the contest. The brief BSC surge was answered with a 14-1 run from the Maroon and Gray. The final spurt from Concord put it up 85-59 with 1:24 remaining in the contest.

Catron poured in a career-high 30 points while grabbing 11 rebounds for her second career double-double. Sophomore forward Madison May scored 11 points and recorded five rebounds in the fourth quarter to finish with game total of 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Fitzwater tallied 12 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Junior guard Emily Boothe flirted with a triple-double as she posted seven points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Monday marked the second time this season that three CU players had a double-double in a single game. Catron, Fitzwater and May each had a double-double in Concord's overtime home win over West Virginia State December 2.

The Mountain Lions held an astounding 65-35 margin on the glass, and held Bluefield State to 30.1 percent (22-for-73) from the field.

CU travels to Wheeling Jesuit 5:30 p.m. Thursday to continue Mountain East Conference play.
