Concord Takes on Rival Bluefield State

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University men's basketball team will head to Bluefield State 8:00 p.m. Monday for its final non-conference game of the 2017-2018 season.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 10-9 on the season after a defeat in Mountain East Conference play against West Virginia Wesleyan.

Meanwhile, Bluefield State sports a mark of 6-10.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Freshman forward Jyles Webster notched a double-double in the loss against Wesleyan as the Chester, Virginia native scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Webster did the bulk of his damage in the second half where he scored 10 points and pulled down eight boards.

It was the second career double-double for Webster, and the third time in five games where he has tallied 10 or more rebounds for CU.

The only other freshman to have multiple double-doubles in the MEC this season is West Liberty's Dalton Bolon.

And Webster is the only true freshman in the conference with two or more double-doubles after Bolon redshirted last season for the Hilltoppers.

THE SPECIALIST
The Mountain Lions continued their recent strong play on the glass as they outrebounded Wesleyan 43-34.

Over the last three games, Concord has owned a combined +51 margin on the boards.

Junior forward Jafar Musa has a been a big reason for the offensive rebounding numbers were the Maroon and Gray has racked up 28 offensive rebounds.

On Saturday against WVWC, the Edo, Nigeria natvie grabbed seven total rebounds in the contest, but six of those came on the offensive side.

In the 12 games, Musa has appeared in this season he has more offensive rebounds (19) than he does defensive rebounds (17).

In the six games that Musa has played at least 10 minutes, the junior has 16 offensive rebounds.

500 CLUB
After being held under 20 points for the first time all season in the contest against WVWC, junior guard Tommy Bolte needs 18 points to score 500 points this season.

In the last four seasons, a CU player has scored 500 points in a single season four times with Aaron Miller pulling off the feat three times, and Rob Reed accumulating over 600 points during the 2015-16 season.

Additionally, Bolte is well on pace to crack the top 20 in single-season scoring with 20th place being Kelly Mann (594 points) during the 1996-97 season.

AFTER REVENGE
For the first time since the 2013-14 season, Concord will not be able to sweep the season series from Bluefield State after the Blues won an 87-83 decision at the Carter Center November 15.

However, the Mountain Lions can grow their all-time series advantage over BSC to 59-37 with a win Monday.

In the first matchup of the season, seven of the 10 players head coach Todd May put on the floor were getting their first taste of the rivalry with Bluefield State.

Only Bolte, sophomore forward Trey Brisco and senior guard B.J. Hamlet had previously played against the Blues.

Bolte was the only Concord player to score in double figures in the first meeting this season as he finished wtih 29 points on 11-for-20 shooting.

However, freshman forward Darian Peterson came close to a double-double with nine points and a then-career-best eight rebounds.

Freshman forward Trey Shuff came off the bench as well to supply eight points and five rebounds while fellow freshman forward Antonio Patteron hit two of his three three-point attempts in the contest.

PPM
In the first meeting this season, Bolte was in the stretch of games where he was averaging a point per minute against Bluefield State.

Entering the game, the Chillicothe, Ohio native had scored 83 points in 80 minutes through two games.

Bolte continued his pace by putting up 29 points in 28 minutes before exiting the game with an injury.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3- CU has had a double-digit rebounder in three straight games.

12- Concord defeated Bluefield State by 12 points, 71-59, when the teams met at BSC last season.

17- CU forced Bluefield State into 17 turnovers in the first meeting this season.

BLUEFIELD STATE AT A GLANCE
The Blues are 6-10 this season and have won their past two games over Vorhees and Kent State Tuscarawas with the victories coming by 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Shaun Duhon leads the Blues with 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest.

Earlier this season, Duhon scored 26 points and grabbed eight boards against Concord. Korey Williams added 23 points in the contest.
