Concord Controls Paint in 90-63 Win Over West Liberty

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team outscored West Liberty 25-10 in the second quarter to take control of the contest in a 90-63 win Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

CU improves to 6-7 overall and 4-6 in the league with the victory. Meanwhile, West Liberty drops to 6-10 overall and 5-5 against MEC foes.

After trailing for most of the first quarter, sophomore forward Madison May scored six straight points and freshman forward Riley Fitzwater added a layup as the Mountain Lions took a 20-19 lead into the second quarter as WLU hit a three-pointer right before the end of  the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Concord led by double figures for the final four minutes of the first half as senior forward Heather Chapman and senior guard Lindsey Overbey each chipped in six points during the period. But, the scoring was well balanced with six different Mountain Lions scoring during the second quarter.

Concord carried a 45-29 lead into the halftime break.

The Mountain Lions continued to outpace the Hilltoppers in the second half as West Liberty never got closer than 17 points in the second half. The Mountain Lions shot 51.3 percent (19-for-37) in the final 20 minutes of the game while holding WLU to 35.1 percent (13-for-37).

CU dominated the paint both offensively and defensively as it scored 62 of its 90 points in the paint, tying its season high previously set against West Virginia State in December. The Mountain Lions limited West Liberty to just six offensive rebounds while swatting away 11 shots—a season-high--and gobbling up a total of 40 defensive rebounds.

May led all scorers in the contest with 27 points on 9-for-11 shooting and was 9-for-12 from the free-throw line in the game. Fitzwater notched her third straight double-double, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds to go along with eight blocks.

Overbey and junior guard Andreanna Pool each supplied 12 points with Overbey's performance coming in an effort off the bench. Chapman was CU's fifth scorer in double figures as she netted 10 points.

Junior guard Emily Boothe did a little bit of everything off the bench for the Mountain Lions as she scored seven points, picked up four rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.

Concord steps out of MEC play for a non-conference contest at Salem International 6:00 p.m. Monday.
