Concord Downed at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets at West Virginia State Saturday evening inside the Walker Convocation Center in Mountain East Conference play.

WVSU (9-5, 2-0 MEC) opened up the match on a 10-3 run as it took control of the set, never letting the Mountain Lions (8-11, 2-2 MEC) to cut the deficit to less than five over the remainder of the set. West Virginia State won the game, 25-18.

Concord was the team that grabbed an early lead, 8-4, in the second set. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis aided the run with two kills while junior middle hitter Brooke Heck and senior middle hitter Shea Hoffman had one kill each. CU continued to hold the lead until a 6-0 West Virginia State lead propelled it to an 18-16 edge. The Mountain Lions regained the lead after a kill from senior setter Casey Mandeville put Concord up 22-20, but WVSU scored the final five points in the set to take the game.

The Yellow Jackets cruised through the third game as they took the match in three set. The third set score was 25-17.

Mandeville amassed 23 assists for CU. Ellis and Heck each had nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter Ellie Lawrence accounted for eight kills.

Concord plays at UVa.-Wise 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
