Concord Defeats Bluefield College in Three

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a sweep of Bluefield College Thursday night at the Carter Center in a non-conference tilt.

CU improves to 8-9 overall while Bluefield College is 9-10 after the setback. Concord won the match 25-21, 25-22 and 25-14

The Mountain Lions scored nine of the first ten and 12 of the first 16 points in the match to take command early. Included in the early run was two service aces by junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus, two kills from both sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis and sophomore outside hitter Ellie Lawrence and three kills from junior middle hitter Brooke Heck.

Concord opened its lead up to as much as 24-14 before a late first set run from the Rams that cut the lead to 24-21, but Ellis ended the set with a kill.

The second game was much tighter with neither team leading by than two points for most of the set. Tied at 20-20, Heck had back-to-back kills to push Concord in front 22-20. A kill each from Ellis, senior middle Shea Hoffman and Lawrence gave CU a 2-0 lead in the match

CU controlled the final set throughout, opening up a 15-5 lead to start the game and winning by 11 points. Ellis and Lawrence each had a kill in the run while senior setter Casey Mandeville and Pranckus each had a service ace.

Ellis tied her career high with 15 kills and finished the match with a .667 hitting percentage. Ellis also had six blocks in the match.

Heck hit .350 with 10 kills. Lawrence added seven kills with a .438 hitting percentage.

As a team, Concord had its second-highest hitting percentage of the season Thursday at .355.

Mandeville tallied 23 assists while sophomore setter Jenna Mounts added 13 assists.

Pranckus had a team-best 16 digs.

CU resumes Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Friday at Charleston.
