Concord Extends Winning Streak to Four with Sweep of Glenville State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team swept Glenville State at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions are 7-9 on the season with a 2-0 mark in the league following the 25-23, 25-11, 25-21 win over the Pioneers (0-9, 0-2 MEC).

Concord played a near flawless first set, but the Pioneers used five service aces and a CU serve error to hang around the first game. Tied at 22-22, sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis and junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus combined for three kills to close out the first set. During the first set, the Mountain Lions hit .576—19 kills in 33 attempts with no errors.

The momentum from the end of the first set carried over to the second set as Concord cruised through the game. Up 7-5, CU went on a 15-4 run to open up a 22-9 advantage. Included in the run were five different Mountain Lions contributing kills. Ellis and senior outside hitter Felicia Huerta each had two kills.

CU led by as much as eight points in the third game before the Pioneers made a late run to close within 19-18, but Concord scored five of the next six points to take the set and the match.

Ellis had a team-best 11 kills in 15 attempts with a .733 hitting percentage. Pranckus added 10 kills and eight digs. Meanwhile, Huerta had four kills and five blocks. Of CU's 10 team blocks, eight of them came in the second set.

Ellis racked up six blocks (three solo, three assist), and junior middle hitter Brooke Heck added four.

Senior setter Casey Mandeville recorded 21 assists and eight digs.

Concord hosts Bluefield College 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
