Concord Stymies West Liberty 1-0

ATHENS, W.Va. – Senior midfielder Micharae Thompson's goal in the 57th minute was the difference as the Concord University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field Thursday over West Liberty.

Concord moves its record to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference while WLU is 2-2-1 and 1-2-1 in the MEC.

The Mountain Lions controlled the game throughout as they possessed the ball, firing off 14 shots to West Liberty's four.

After a scoreless first half, Concord sent two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half as freshman forward Sarah Hill had two shots saved. With CU containing the ball, junior forward Pilar Elias maneuvered down the goal line. Elias played the ball near the net, and the ball was deflected back towards the top of the penalty box where Thompson got a running start at the delivery.

The Hurricane, West Virginia native sent the ball in the bottom left corner of the next for the game-winning score. It was Thompson's first goal of the season with Elias assisting on her second.

Hill had three shots on goal to lead Concord.

The CU backline defense of junior Joanna Aiello, freshman Morgan Carmichael, sophomore Ali Cook and  freshman Alyssa Mahar kept the Hilltoppers away from the scoring area throughout the game as WLU had just four shots and one on goal.

Freshman Kate Maher extended her scoreless streak to 233 minutes by stopping the only shot she faced.

Concord faces Notre Dame 4:00 p.m. Sunday on the road.
