Concord Falls in Doubleheader at Charleston

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost a pair of games to the University of Charleston, 2-1 and 7-2, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Appalachian Power Park.

Concord drops to 22-21 overall and 15-11 in the league while Charleston moves to 26-18 overall and 14-12 against MEC foes.

Game 1: Charleston 2 – Concord 1
UC's Lee Carneal's sixth-inning home run was the difference in the contest as Charleston won by the slimmest of margins.

The game was a pitching duel between sophomore Troy Beckner and Charleston's Kaleb Kinder.

Junior infielder Chad Frazier doubled home freshman outfielder freshman outfielder Ryan Fralin in the third. The lone run would stand until Charleston scored in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.

The Mountain Lions were unable to regain the lead in the top of the sixth before Carneal's solo home run in the bottom of the frame.

Frazier had two of the six CU hits.

Beckner (6-2) was the tough luck loser as he struck out two while scattering six hits and two runs over six innings on the mound.

Game 2: Charleston 7 – Concord 2
Three eighth-inning runs helped secure a Charleston win in the nightcap.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first with two unearned runs in the first inning, and added a single run in both the fourth and fifth to stretch its lead to 4-0.

Freshman infielder Nathan Neff reached after getting hit by a pitch in the seventh with one out and later scored on a wild pitch to get Concord back to 4-1.

Sophomore catcher Jordan Clark picked up his 56th RBI of the season with a run-scoring double that brought home sophomore outfielder Evan Webb in the eighth as Concord got to within 4-2, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get.

Charleston received a bases-clearing double from Ethan Hunt in the bottom half of the eighth to take a 7-2 advantage.

Perhaps the best scoring opportunity of the game for CU came in the sixth as it loaded the bases with one out, however, reliever Robert Fultineer induced a double play to the first batter he faced in the inning to keep Charleston ahead 4-0.

Clark finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double and two walks in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Austin Southcott (4-5) was tagged with the loss after throwing six innings. Southcott gave up six hits and two earned runs in his outing.

The Mountain Lions and UC will continue the four-game set 1:00 p.m. Sunday from Power Park.
