MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
CU is 22-19 this season and is tied with West Virginia Wesleyan for first place in the Mountain East Conference South Division at 15-9.

Concord is coming off a 2-2 road trip at Glenville State where the Mountain Lions dropped the first two games of the set before winning the final two contests.

The Mountain Lions hit nine home runs throughout the series with sophomore catcher Jordan Clark blasting five, sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma launching two and junior infielder Chad Frazier and sophomore infielder Brett Simmons each hitting one.

With five home runs, Clark brought his season total to 11 which ties for first in the MEC with Shepherd's Daniel Heleine.

Wiersma has now hit eight home runs which doubles his total from last season and slots him sixth in the league in home runs.

Frazier's solo shot in the final game of the series was his fourth of the season while Simmons' three-run homer in game three was his first career home run.

CU plated 14 runs in game four of the series as it won 14-3.

It was the 12th time Concord has scored 10 or more runs in a game this season.

In the Mountain Lions' 11-run win in the series finale, senior pitcher Nate Werner picked up his 15th career win as he pitched all nine innings for Concord.

Werner tied Concord Hall of Famer Donovan Huffer and Drew McClanahan for eighth on the all-time wins list at CU.

Senior pitcher Austin Southcott tossed 9.2 innings in Concord's 4-3 defeat versus Glenville State in game two of the series.

Southcott became the first MEC pitcher to toss more than nine innings this season as he struck out a career-high 11 batters during his time on the mound.

Earlier this season, sophomore pitcher Troy Beckner fanned 12 batters at Fairmont State.

Beckner and Southcott become the second set of teammates to have at least 10 strikeouts in a game this season in the MEC, joining West Liberty's Justin Retzer and Greg Stagani.

Freshman pitcher Joseph Lowder nearly joined the club in game three of the series as he struck out nine hitters while scattering a run and four hits in six innings.

Junior catcher Paul Williams tallied three doubles at Glenville State to bring his season total to 13, placing him second in the conference in two-base hits.

Sophomore outfielder Evan Webb, Wiersma each have 12 doubles while Clark is adding 10, making Concord the only team in the MEC with four or more players with 10 doubles.

In fact, only Charleston has more than one player with 10 doubles this season.

Last season at Concord, the Mountain Lions and UC split a four-game series with Concord winning the bookend games of the series and Charleston taking the two middle games.

In the series finale, CU pounded out 17 hits as Clark, Frazier and Williams each finished with two hits in a 13-9 Concord victory.

The Mountain Lions won game one of the four-game set 5-3.

Clark, Simmons, Wiersma and Williams each had two multi-hit games against UC last season.

Concord hasn't played a game at Charleston since 2014.

SCOUTING CHARLESTON
Charleston is 24-18 overall this season and 12-12 in the MEC, three games behind Concord and WVWC for first place.

Of UC's 24 wins, 16 of them have come at either Appalachian Power Park, the home field for the West Virginia Power, the low-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, or at its on-campus field, Triana Field.

Freshman pitcher Jonathan Carr has thrown 53 innings for the Golden Eagles this season, posting 40 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.25.

Adam Jafine is averaging nearly a strikeout an inning with 56 punch outs in 58.1 innings. Jafine's ERA is 4.32.

Lee Carneal is UC's top hitter with an average of .373, four home runs and 31 RBI.
