GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost two games to Glenville State Sunday afternoon at the Sue Morris Sports Complex in Mountain East Conference action as the Pioneers notched two walk-off victories, 9-8 and 4-3.
Game 1: Glenville State 9 – Cocnord 8 (Eight Innings)
Concord (20-19, 13-9 MEC) erasing a 7-0 deficit was overshadowed by Glenville State (13-23, 10-12 MEC) scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win game one.
With a six-run fifth inning, GSC expanded its lead from 1-0 to 7-0.
But the Mountain Lions answered in a big way in the top of the sixth as they trimmed the deficit to 7-6.
Junior catcher
Paul Williams got the Mountain Lions on the board with an RBI double before junior infielder
Chad Frazier scored freshman infielder
Nathan Neff. After sophomore infielder
Trevor Wiersma was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore catcher
Jordan Clark hit his second grand slam of the season two batters later to draw CU to within one.
CU was able to tie the game in the seventh after Frazier's sacrifice fly to right field scored Neff who drew a one-out walk earlier in the frame and advanced on a Williams double.
Clark came up clutch for the Mountain Lions in the eighth as he drilled his second home run of the game to push Concord in front for the first time in the contest.
However, the Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory.
Clark, freshman outfielder
Ryan Fralin and Williams all had two hits. Clark added five RBI and Frazier drove in two additional runs.
Senior pitcher
Eli Flynn (3-2) was charged with the loss in relief, giving up two runs. Sophomore pitcher
Troy Beckner pitched the first four innings of the game, allowing four runs and striking out four.
Game 2: Glenville State 4 – Concord 3 (10 Innings)
Glenville State walked off for the second straight game with a bloop single into center field in the 10
th inning.
Both teams scored early in the game as Glenville State's first inning run was answered by a run-scoring single from sophomore infielder
Brett Simmons in the second inning.
After the Pioneers scored their own second-inning run, Frazier grounded out allowing a run to score in the third, and Wiersma added an RBI single to bring across Neff putting Concord up 3-2.
GSC evened the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning and the score would stay there until the 10
th.
Senior pitcher
Austin Southcott retired the side in four of five innings from fifth to the ninth allowing a single in the eighth for the lone base runner for the Pioneers until the 10
th.
It appeared Concord would jump ahead in the seventh on a safety bunt from Williams, but Fralin was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.
Again in the 10
th the Mountain Lions were primed to go ahead after sophomore outfielder
Evan Webb drew a two-out walk to load the bases and bring up Clark. However, Clark ripped a line drive right into the pitcher's glove as GSC escaped another jam.
In the bottom half of the 10
th, Glenville State took advantage of a CU error and a passed ball to get the game-winning run in scoring position. With two outs, GSC's Zach Bacon lifted a single into center field to score Kyle Johnston as Glenville State won 4-3.
Southcott (4-4) pitched 9.2 innings for the Mountain Lions as he was saddled with a tough loss. The Princeton, West Virginia native struck out a career-high 11 batters while scattering nine hits and two earned runs.
Frazier and Webb each had two hits for CU.
