MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
CU took two of three games from Lake Erie this past weekend at Anderson Field as both wins came on Sunday, and were walk-off victories for the Mountain Lions.
Before Sunday, the last walk-off win for Concord came two seasons against Fairmont State when then-catcher and current assistant coach
Charlie Goss singled to center field to score the decisive run.
Sunday's game one win was a come-from-behind victory for CU, the second comeback victory for Concord this season when trailing after six innings.
Down 11-9 going to the seventh inning, sophomore infielder
Trevor Wiersma plated the game-tying run with a single back up the middle. Two batters later, freshman infielder
Jakob Divers lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score junior infielder
Chad Frazier.
In the second game, junior catcher
Paul Williams drove home freshman outfielder
Ryan Fralin for the game-winning run in the seventh. Williams was also in the middle of the rally in game one as he recorded the first of three RBI in a three-run seventh.
Over the weekend, the Vinton, Virginia native elevated his average 33 points from .300 to .333 as he notched his first multi-RBI game of the season in game two of the series.
After hitting 15 doubles through 12 games, Concord added six more two-base hits against LEC in three games.
Sophomore outfielder
Evan Webb recorded his first two career doubles. Wiersma added two while Frazier and Williams each had one.
The Mountain Lions doubled their stolen base total for the season versus Lake Erie. Going into the weekend, CU had just five steals, but produced five more stolen bases against the Storm.
Frazier was successful in two steal attempts. Freshman infielder
Nathan Neff, Webb and Williams all swiped one base. For Neff and Webb, it was their first career stolen bases.
Sophomore pitcher
Troy Beckner gave Concord another quality start on the mound as he tossed seven innings, allowing five hits, an unearned run and striking out five batters.
Beckner ranks eighth in the Mountain East Conference in ERA of pitchers who have thrown at least 10 innings this season.
In the rubber match of the series, senior pitcher
Austin Southcott went the distance for Concord as he earned his first win of the season.
The Princeton, West Virginia native struck out seven batters over seven innings while allowing two earned runs. It was the most strikeouts for a CU pitcher this season and the most since junior pitcher
Reece Edwards had eight strikeouts versus UVa.-Wise May 8 of last season.
Last season, Concord took a 14-9 decision over Bluefield State at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, West Virginia.
Wiersma drove in four of CU's runs in the game, and recorded two doubles, a career-high. The Vancouver, British Columbia native also went 4-for-5 at the plate to tie his career-best in hits.
Sophomore infielder
Brett Simmons tallied two RBI against the Blues. Sophomore catcher
Jordan Clark, Frazier and Williams all had multi-hit games along with Simmons and Wiersma last season.
CU is 49-4 all-time versus BSC.
SCOUTING BLUEFIELD STATE
The Blues are 4-8 this season.
Bluefield State earned two wins over Vorhees and have one win each over Claflin and Paine.
Sophomore Peyton Durham leads Bluefield State in average (.348), home runs (three) and RBI (11) while being tied for the team lead in hits (16).
On the mound, Addison Meeks has tossed 15 innings, allowing 18 hits and eight earned runs.
Meeks (2-0) and Bo Williams (2-1) have combined for BSC's four wins this season.
