MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
CU is 14-18 this season and 3-5 versus MEC foes.
Most recently, the Mountain Lions split a doubleheader with Glenville State Friday before playing a pair of closely-contested games with nationally-ranked games against West Virginia Wesleyan.
CU won game one versus Glenville State 5-1 behind a stellar pitching performance from senior pitcher/outfielder
Sarah Herndon as she earned her 22
nd win in the circle, tying her for fifth all-time at CU.
Herndon tossed all seven innings against the Pioneers, allowing one unearned run on four hits and striking out four hitters.
Senior shortstop
Alayna Furr batted .500 as she went 12-for-24 at the plate, extending her lead in the MEC in total hits. The Lovettsville, Virginia has 53 hits this season.
Sophomore outfielder
Abby Beatty is second in the MEC in hits (37). Beatty is also fourth in the league in RBI (24).
The first game against West Virginia Wesleyan was a pitcher's duel between Wesleyan's Hannah Vet and senior pitcher
Allie Reid. The Bobcats grabbed a narrow 2-1 win over CU.
Although a tough-luck loser versus WVWC, it was the sixth time this season Reid has allowed two or less earned runs when pitching at least five innings in a game.
In game two against WVWC, the Mountain Lions erased an early 7-0 hole by scoring seven runs combined in the second and third innings. However, West Virginia Wesleyan won the game in extra innings, 10-7.
In the seven unanswered runs by CU was a two-run home run from freshman second baseman/shortstop
Jenna Witt, her second career homer.
Freshman pitcher/outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick also picked up two RBI against Wesleyan in game two for her first career multi-RBI contest.
Last season Concord and UVa.-Wise split four games in the regular season before the Cavaliers won an MEC Tournament game against CU.
Three of the four regular season contests were decided by a total of four runs with Concord winning 7-5 at UVa.-Wise and notching a 9-8 walk-off win at home.
In the road win, Herndon hit her first career home run, a three-run shot to lift CU to the win. The Berryville, Virginia native also tallied the win in the circle for the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore first baseman
Lauren Blunt aided in the home win for Concord as she launched a two-run home run, ripped a double and plated four runs.
After CU tied the game in the sixth inning, senior third baseman
Courtney Purtell plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory, 9-8.
Concord trails in the all-time series versus UVa.-Wise, 10-7.
SCOUTING UVA.-WISE
The Cavaliers are 15-9 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
Pitcher Taylor Brandts is 7-4 in the circle with an ERA of 1.87. She has recorded 66 strikeouts in 78.1 innings this season.
At the plate, Zoe Millard is batting .393. Samantha Ely is the leader in RBI with 21, adding two home runs and four doubles. Ely is batting .324.
UVa.-Wise is 4-5 in true road games this season.
