Game Recap: Baseball |

Concord Wins Two Versus Notre Dame

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team took two games from Notre Dame College Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (8-10, 2-0 MEC) won game one 4-0 behind a brilliant pitching performance from sophomore Troy Beckner before CU edged Notre Dame (3-12, 0-2 MEC) 5-4 in the nightcap.

Game 1: Concord 4 – Notre Dame 0
Beckner limited the Falcons to two hits over seven innings as he tossed his second complete game of the season to improve to 3-0 on the year.

CU's offense was held at bay through the first four innings before the Mountain Lions got on the board in the fifth with an RBI single from sophomore infielder Adrian Peralta that scored junior infielder Ian Southcott.

Concord was able to tack onto its lead in the sixth after junior catcher Paul Williams rounded the bases on a NDC error. With runners still on base, sophomore outfielder Evan Webb plated junior infielder Chad Frazier and sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma to extend the lead to 4-0.

As for Beckner, he only allowed five baserunners to get into scoring position during his outing. The Roanoke, Virginia native struck out three batters in his effort as he lowered his ERA to 2.56 on the season. Over the last 26 innings on the mound, Beckner has given up just three earned runs.

Webb finished with two RBI on a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate.

Game 2: Concord 5 – Notre Dame 4
CU finished off the sweep of Notre Dame with a timely run in the seventh inning after NDC clawed back from a 4-0 deficit.

Wiersma got the scoring started early as he belted a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. After three consecutive walks, Wiersma launched his first home run of the season over the right field fence to put the Mountain Lions up 4-0 early.

The Falcons answered with a pair of runs in the second and sixth innings to draw even 4-4 with Concord.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, Frazier got the rally started with a walk followed by a stolen base. Wiersma once again came up clutch for CU as he dropped a single into right field that brought Frazier around to score the decisivie run.

Senior pitcher Austin Southcott threw eight strong innings, but Notre Dame would not go away in the ninth. After Soutchott struck out the leadoff batter, Austin Barnhart doubled to right field to put the tying run in scoring position. But senior pitcher Eli Flynn induced a pop up and a line drive out to earn his second save of the season and improve Southcott to 2-2 on the season.

Southcott went 8.1 innings, striking out six batters and giving up two earned runs.

Wiersma finished his afternoon 2-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. Junior outfielder Oscar Garcia also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
CU hosts Urbana for a doubleheader 1:00 p.m. Monday at Anderson Field.
