Concord Drops Game One, Scores 29 Runs in Game Two Win Over Urbana

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Urbana Monday afternoon as CU dropped the first game 10-1, but bounced back in a big way to take game two 29-6.

The Mountain Lions improve to 9-11 overall and 3-1 in the MEC while UU is 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Game 1: Urbana 10 – Concord 1
The Blue Knights scored 10 runs in their final three at-bats to win game one.

CU jumped out on Urbana quickly, though, as sophomore outfielder Evan Webb plated junior infielder Chad Frazier with a first-inning single.

The game remained 1-0 through four innings as freshman pitcher Joseph Lowder retired 11 straight batters from the end of the first inning through the beginning of the fifth. With one down in the top half of the fifth, UU connected on five straight hits to take the lead, propelling it to a 10-1 victory.

Sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma continued his recent success at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort in game one.

Lowder (0-2) was tagged with the loss, tossing 5.1 innings allowing five runs and striking out four batters.

Game 2: Concord 29 – Urbana 6
Concord put up the fifth-most runs in a Division II game this year as it scored at least one run in the first seven innings.

All nine starters for Concord recorded at least one hit and 10 total Mountain Lions had a base knock throughout the game. Nine different players combined for the 29 runs that crossed home plate with each player scoring at least twice.

Sophomore catcher Jordan Clark and freshman infielder Jakob Divers paced the CU offense in the nightcap as each had had four hits and six RBI. Divers established a new career-high in RBI while Clark was one off his career single-game best in RBI. Three of Clark's RBI got the scoring started for CU as he ripped a bases-clearing three-run double in the first inning.

Frazier and junior catcher Paul Williams each had five hits with Frazier reaching base in all seven plate appearances.  The Roanoke, Virginia native was 5-for-5 and also walked twice in game two, scoring five times.

Wiersma launched his second home run in as many days by sending a three-run shot over the right field fence in the sixth inning.

Individually, the Mountain Lions set some MEC single-game records Monday afternoon. Frazier and Williams are the only players in the conference with five-hit games this season while
Clark and Divers' RBI count are tied for the most in a single game this season. Along with Frazier, Wiersma set the single-game high for runs scored in a game with five.

The 29 runs scored by CU eclipses the 21 runs scored by Fairmont State, set on Sunday, while the Maroon and Gray pounded out 28 hits, also a league best in 2017.

Monday's offensive outburst in game two was the most runs scored by a CU team since 2001 when Concord plated 36 runs against WVU Tech.

Senior pitcher Nate Werner tossed a quality game for the Mountain Lions as he improved to 2-0. Werner gave up three runs on seven hits, and tied his career high with eight strikeouts.

The Mountain Lions travel to West Liberty 1:00 p.m. Saturday before taking on Wheeling Jesuit Sunday.
