CLERMONT, FLA.- The Concord University softball team fell in its first two games of the Florida PFX Tournament on Saturday.
Concord dropped the first game to Indianapolis 7-4, and the second game to West Chester 6-4.
Concord is now 8-10 on the season, with Indianapolis improving to 12-4 overall and West Chester now 7-3 in 2017.
GAME 1: Indianapolis 7 - Concord 4
A late Concord rally fell short as seven runs from Indy in the first inning was too much for CU.
Concord briefly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after senior outfielder
Lauren Lewis drove in her 14
th run of the season on a single to right field to score senior shortstop
Alayna Furr.
However, UIndy used seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 7-1 lead after the first frame.
After the offensive outburst through the first inning, neither team garnered another run until the sixth inning, when freshman second baseman/shortstop
Jenna Witt singled home sophomore outfielder
Abby Beatty to cut the deficit to 7-2 after six.
Concord continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the seventh, with Lewis notching another RBI with a single up the middle to score freshman utility
Amber Stokes. Another single from Beatty scored Furr to reduce the advantage for the Greyhounds to 7-4, but a double play turned by UIndy cut short any chance for a Concord rally.
Witt, Lewis, and Beatty each had two hits. Lewis picked up her sixth game with two ore more RBI this season.
GAME 2: West Chester 6 – Concord 4
The Mountain Lions nearly pulled off a comeback in the final two innings of play, but a five-run deficit was too much for the Mountain Lions to come back from.
The Mountain Lions found themselves in an early deficit in game two on the day, falling behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning.
CU chipped away at the lead almost immediately after, with Beatty bringing home Furr on an RBI groundout to cut WCU's lead to 3-1 after the first inning of play.
West Chester tacked on a run in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1 after four innings.
The Golden Rams added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
CU fought back in the bottom of the sixth inning as it plated three runs.
Witt started the proceedings by doubling to center field to bring home freshman catcher
Calli Van Gorden, who was pinch running for senior pitcher/outfielder
Sarah Herndon who started the inning off with a single. Lewis picked up her third RBI of the day on a groundout to bring home Beatty for the second run, before Witt touched home plate herself on a single by junior third baseman
Alycea Watson. However, Concord was unable to get any closer.
WCU hung on in the seventh inning to win 6-4.
Furr finished 3-for-4 from the plate, bringing her season hit total to 28. Witt also added two hits and an RBI.
Senior pitcher
Allie Reid (4-3), took the loss in the circle.
Concord will begin day two of the tournament at 10:30 a.m. Sunday against Post before facing Seton Hill at 3:30 p.m.
