ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team opens its season 3:00 p.m. Friday as it starts a three-game set at UNC-Pembroke.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
The series continues 1:00 p.m. Saturday and concludes 12:00 p.m.
This will be the second consecutive season that CU starts its season at UNCP.
The Mountain Lions were swept in the three-game set, but Concord had some notable performances against the Braves.
Sophomore infielder
Brett Simmons had a hit in each game at UNC-Pembroke. Meanwhile, fellow sophomore infielder
Trevor Wiersma had a multi-hit contest in game two of the series going 2-for-4.
Out of the bullpen, senior pitcher
Eli Flynn pitched a scoreless inning of relief in game one of the series.
In game three of the series, sophomore pitchers
Reed McNeer and
Noah Tucker each tossed a scoreless inning and struck out two batters in relief in game three. Â
The Mountain Lions hit .314 (11-for-35) with runners in scoring position last season at UNC-Pembroke. Furthermore, Concord returns its top hitters from a season ago that thrived with runners in scoring position in sophomore
Jordan Clark and junior catcher
Paul Williams.
Williams hit .407 (24-for-59) with RISP while Clark batted .406 (28-for-69) with runners with RISP.
As a team, the Mountain Lions hit .348 for the entire season with runners in scoring position. Junior infielder
Chad Frazier (.362) and Wiersma (.356) both hit above the .348 with RISP in addition to Clark and Williams.
As an offense, Concord hit .333 last year which tied Quincy for 12
th nationally. CU has three hitters returning who hit at or above .333 last year in Frazier (.396), Wiersma (.362) and Williams (.333)
Frazier led the Mountain East Conference in batting average in 2016.
Wiersma starts the season with an active streak of reaching base safely in 15 consecutive games while Frazier has an active seven-game hit streak going back to last year.
SCOUTING UNC-PEMBROKE
The Braves started their season last weekend as they took two of three games from Shepherd.
UNCP won a 4-0 decision over Pfeiffer Tuesday to move its record to 3-1.
Nick Debo is the reigning Peach Belt Player of the Week after he went 4-for-10 with a home run, three RBI and three doubles versus Shepherd.
Drew Beaver is hitting .571 for the season as he has also clubbed a home run and recorded five RBI.
