Concord Stifled by Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University women's basketball team fell 54-36 to Charleston on Senior Night at the Carter Center on the penultimate day of the Mountain East Conference regular season.

Concord drops to 7-20 overall (5-16 MEC), while Charleston improves to 10-17 overall with a 9-12 mark in conference games.

An 8-0 start by the Golden Eagles put Concord in a hole early before a jump shot by senior guard Olivia Morgan stopped the run and gave Concord its first points of the game at the 5:07 mark in the first half.

The Richmond, Virginia native pulled Concord within four after making two free throws to cut the Charleston lead to 8-4 with 4:34 left in the first quarter. A free throw by junior guard Lindsey Overbey and a jump shot from junior guard Danielle Catron helped CU to cut the Charleston lead to three, 10-7, to end the first period.

An old school three-point play from sophomore guard Emily Boothe to open the second quarter helped Concord to tie the game at 10-10 with 9:43 left to play in the first half.

However, the Golden Eagles kept CU from taking the lead, keeping Concord within two for the remainder of the first half before taking a 25-19 lead at the break.

Morgan posted eight points through first two quarters.

Charleston extended its lead to double digits in the third quarter, 34-24, with 5:26 to go in the third quarter.

Another layup by Morgan trimmed the Golden Eagle lead to eight with 3:37 to go in the third, 34-26.

The Golden Eagles held on for the remainder of the game, not letting CU get any closer than 10 en route to a 54-36 victory.

Morgan tied her career-high in points with 13, while Catron added 10 points off of the bench. Junior forward Heather Chapman grabbed seven rebounds. Morgan also tallied three rebounds and five steals.
