Concord Drops Doubleheader to West Liberty

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost a non-conference doubleheader to West Liberty Friday afternoon at Epling Stadium.

The Mountain Lions fell to 0-5 overall while West Liberty moves to 2-0 after winning 4-2 and 16-5.

Game 1: West Liberty 4 – Concord 2 (Eight Innings)
WLU plated two runs in the top of the eighth, and held off a Concord rally in the bottom of the frame to earn a game one win.

Senior pitcher Eli Flynn was called in relief and recorded back-to-back outs after the Hilltoppers had the leadoff man reach in the eighth inning. However, West Liberty put together a string of three straight hits to plate the two runs.

In the bottom of the inning, CU was able to get the tying run aboard after back-to-back walks issued to junior infielder Ian Southcott and freshman infielder Jakob Divers. WLU's Tori Fuscardo got the final out of the inning to preserve the win for West Liberty.

Concord had to rally two different times to force extra innings. Down 1-0 in the second, junior infielder Chad Frazier beat out an infield single that scored sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma who had led off the inning with his own base knock.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, sophomore infielder Adrian Peralta lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that plated freshman infielder Nathan Neff who had ripped a double to start the inning.

The Peralta sacrifice fly was the final run scored until the Hilltoppers scored twice in the eighth.

Frazier finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI as he reached base safely all four times by walking twice.

Flynn (0-1) was charged with the loss in 1.2 innings of work.

Senior pitcher Austin Southcott gave Concord a quality start as he worked 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two batters.

Game 2: West Liberty 16 – Concord 5
West Liberty scored six runs in the third and then added another six runs in the seventh inning to win by 11 runs.

Peralta got the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard in the first inning with another sac fly that scored Frazier.

West Liberty plated six runs in the third before CU cut the deficit to 6-3 as Neff and freshman outfielder Carter Shrewsbury each crossed home plate in the bottom of the third.

Concord got as close as 7-5 in the fifth after run-scoring hits from sophomore catcher Jordan Clark and Peralta. However, WLU scored the final nine runs of the contest.

Clark and Peralta each finished with two RBI while Clark and Frazier both had two hits to pace the CU offense.

Freshman pitcher Indiana Hall (0-2) took the loss for Concord, going 2.2 innings.

The Mountain Lions start a four-game series 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Winston-Salem State.
