Concord Falters Against Wheeling Jesuit

ATHENS, W.Va-  The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a 67-48 decision to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center. 
 
Concord drops to 6-17 this year (4-14 MEC), while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 20-4 overall (14-4 MEC). 
 
Concord opened the game on a 9-5 run after a layup by junior forward Heather Chapman, a three-pointer by sophomore guard Emily Boothe, a jumpshot from senior guard Alexis Lowery and a layup from junior guard Lindsey Overbey helped get the Mountain Lions off to a lead after the first three minutes.     

A closely contested first period saw the Mountain Lions take an early 16-4 lead after one quarter. Lowery scored seven of her game-high 16 points in the opening quarter, going 3-for-5 from the field. 

The two teams continued to exchange shots in the second period, with both teams shooting under 40 percent throughout the second quarter. 

Junior guard Danielle Catron posted a strong quarter to keep the game close, notching nine points and three rebounds to help Concord tie the game at 28 at halftime after trailing by as many as six, 25-19, with 3:52 left in the half. 

The Marion, Virginia native scored the last seven points of the half for the Mountain Lions.

The Cardinals opened the second half on a 12-2 run, taking a 40-30 lead with 6:17 left in the third. 

WJU held Concord to seven points in the quarter to take a 46-35 lead entering the final period. 

Wheeling Jesuit made shots down the stretch in the fourth quarter to win 67-48. 

Lowery tied for the game-high lead in points with 16. Chapman finished with six points while grabbing 10 rebounds for the third time this season. Catron also posted double figures, scoring 13 points. 

Concord faces Davis & Elkins on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
