Concord Downed in Season Opener at UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Concord University baseball team could not overcome seven combined runs from UNC-Pembroke in the fourth and fifth innings as CU fell 15-4 to the Braves Friday afternoon in the season opener.

The Mountain Lions got off to a fast start as junior infielder Chad Frazier homered on the first pitch he saw in the top of the first inning to get Concord on the board.

The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, and held a 2-1 edge until sophomore catcher Jordan Clark knocked a bases-loaded, two-run single into left field that plated Frazier and junior outfielder Oscar Garcia who started the rally with a leadoff single.

CU held a one-run advantage until a three-run fourth from UNC-Pembroke. UNCP tacked on four more runs in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead.

In the sixth inning, Garcia drove in junior outfielder Nico Church after Church drew a lead-off walk, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get as UNC-Pembroke added five more runs in the seventh innings.

Clark, Garcia and sophomore outfielder Evan Webb each tallied two hits. Clark notched his 19th career multi-RBI game with the two-run single in the third. Frazier scored two of the four runs for Concord.

Senior pitcher Austin Southcott was tagged with the loss, throwing 4.2 innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out two batters.

Concord and UNCP resume the series 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
