CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a 78-63 decision to the University of Charleston in Mountain East Conference play Wednesday night at the Wehrle Center.
After an evenly played first quarter that saw seven lead changes, Charleston (4-2, 3-0 MEC) was able to hold the Mountain Lions (2-4, 0-3 MEC) to nine points in the second and secure a 31-23 advantage at halftime.
The early success for Concord was paced by sophomore forward
Madison May who had seven of her team-high 16 points in the first quarter.
A corner jumper by senior forward
Heather Chapman in the early stages of the third quarter cut the deficit to 31-25 with 8:32 remaining in the third. However, the Golden Eagles went on a 14-6 run over the next 4:40 of the third quarter to open up a 45-31 lead.
After trading buckets with UC, the Mountain Lions still trailed by 14 with 2:22 left in the third. However, freshman guard
Keely Lundy drilled one of her three three-pointers in the game, and May added a fast break layup to cut the UC advantage to 49-40 to start the fourth.
The Golden Eagles scored 10 of the first 12 points in fourth quarter, and Concord was never able to get the deficit back to single digits.
Along with May, Chapman finished in double figures with 10 points.
Lundy came off the bench to net a career-high nine points.
Octavia Loll and Anna Hayton each had 15 points to lead Charleston.
Concord returns home for its first MEC game at the Carter Center 2:00 p.m. Saturday against West Virginia State.
