Box Score URBANA, Ohio – The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to overcome strong second and third quarters by Urbana as it fell to the Blue Knights 76-69 in Mountain East Conference action Monday evening at the Grimes Center.
Concord (2-3, 0-2 MEC) held UU (2-1, 2-0 MEC) to 28 percent shooting in the first 10 minutes of the game, however, the Blue Knights outscored the Mountain Lions by 22 combined points in the second and third quarters.
CU started strong offensively as it shot nearly 45 percent from the floor in the first quarter with junior guard
Emily Boothe scoring seven of her 12 points in the period. Concord held a 17-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
But, seven turnovers in the second quarter from Concord allowed Urbana to climb back into the contest as it hit two three-pointers in the final 1:43 of the first half to carry a 31-28 lead into
halftime.
The Blue Knights built their lead up to as much as 15 points in the closing minutes of the third quarter before CU began to chip away at the deficit.
A layup by sophomore forward
Madison May cut the UU lead to five, 57-52, with 7:21 remaining. Three minutes later, it appeared Concord might be able to eat into the deficit further. After Boothe converted a layup, CU was down just six, but Urbana's Megan Beachy hit one of her four three-pointers to run the lead back to nine points as the Blue Knights hung on to win by seven points.
May tallied her career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Athens, West Virginia native scored 14 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter and eight of her rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Boothe scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting for her first double-digit scoring game of the season.
Freshman forward
Riley Fitzwater finished a point shy of her third double-double as she notched nine points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Junior guard
Andreanna Pool (13 points) and senior guard
Danielle Catron (10 points) also finished in double figures for Concord.
The Mountain Lions resume MEC play November 29 at Charleston.
