ATHENS, W.Va. – Playing double overtime for the second straight game, the Concord University women's soccer team came up victorious against Charleston, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.
Junior forward
Pilar Elias' goal in the 104
th minute sent the Mountain Lions (6-6, 4-6 MEC) to a win in the contest.
After gaining control of the ball near midfield, freshman forward
Sarah Hill served a ball to freshman midfielder
Courtney Wallace who began to navigate towards the goal line. Wallace sent a pass in front of the net where Elias was crashing towards the goal. The Waterville, Maine native was able to sneak the shot past Charleston (3-6-4, 2-5-4 MEC) goalkeeper Zoe Zyta who had previously made 11 saves in the game.
The contest featured a myriad of action as the team combined for 27 total shots and 19 on goal.
Both teams had a chance to win the contest in the first overtime as Hill had a shot turned aside by Zyta in the 99
th minute. Right before the first overtime buzzer, freshman goalkeeper
Katie Maher tipped a shot by UC's Carly Anderson over the crossbar.
Maher saved seven shots to record her fourth shutout of the season. One of the more impressive saves for Maher was a sprawling save right after a corner kick in the 36
th minute. She would also make a similar save on a shot by Dominique Dosky in the 78
th minute.
Elias recorded four shots on goal for the Mountain Lions. Hill added three and sophomore defender
Delaney Crumblish notched two.
Concord welcomes Notre Dame 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Field.
