Concord Hangs Tough With Number One Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost to the number team in the nation in Charleston Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field, 3-0.

The Golden Eagles (12-0, 8-0 MEC) scored quickly in the game as they opened up a 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute of the contest.

Concord (2-9-1, 2-5 MEC) was able to stymy the potent offense of Charleston for the remainder of the half to only trail 1-0 at the intermission.

CU was able to continue to keep UC out of the net for the majority of the second half. In the 87th minute, it appeared the Mountain Lions may be able to tie the game. Sophomore forward Sam Ashton had a shot from the top of the penalty area blocked down onto the foot of sophomore midfielder Maximi Ramioulle who had his shot steer wide of the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Charleston scored off of a deflection in front of the net and added a third goal on a free kick with less than 30 seconds remaining in the contest.

Ashton accounted for two of the CU shots on the afternoon. Ramioulle had one and sophomore defender Pedro Bassin had a free kick sail high in the 64th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Brown stopped eight shots for CU.

Concord hosts Notre Dame 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
