Concord's Late Rally Comes Up Short Against Notre Dame

ATHENS, W.Va. – Despite a strong second-half effort, the Concord University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Notre Dame Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

Notre Dame (8-4, 6-3 MEC) scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute as it held off a strong surge by the Mountain Lions (2-10-1, 2-5 MEC0 in the closing minutes.

CU was outshot 10-2 in the first half, but the second half was entirely different story as Concord maintained possession and fired off 16 second half attempts to NDC's five.

One of the best onslaughts at an equalizing goal for the Mountain Lions came in between the 66th and 69th minute where Concord had four shots on goal. Sophomore forward Sam Ashton and senior midfielder Yacouba Issa Traore each had shots just miss the goal mouth while senior midfielder Mahamadou Coulibaly had a shot blocked down. Following the blocked shot, sophomore defender Pedro Bassin had a header go high on a preceding corner kick.

In the final four minutes, CU put Notre Dame under siege with five more attempts. A heading attempt from both Traore and sophomore midfielder Maxime Ramioulle could not find the back of the net. A desperation attempt from senior midfielder Alex Rhodes was blocked in the final 30 seconds while Coulibaly had a shot saved as the final horn went off.

Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Brown was stellar in net to allow Concord to have the scoring chances in the second half as he saved eight shots for the game.

Traore led CU with three shots on goal.

CU hits the road to take on West Virginia Wesleyan 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
