WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University football team could not climb out of an early 20-0 deficit as it fell on the road 44-14 to West Liberty Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.
After West Liberty (3-6, 3-6 MEC) scored the first three touchdowns of the game, senior running back
Jamal Petty got CU (2-7, 1-7 MEC) on the board with a 31-yard touchdown run that capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive.
The score remained 20-7 West Liberty at halftime.
The next three scores in the game belonged to the Hilltoppers as they ran their lead up to 41-7 with 4:34 left in the third quarter.
Senior running back
Nick Loftin capped another 75-yard drive with a two-yard plunge with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter. The key play in the short five-play drive was a 39-yard run by Loftin.
WLU added a fourth-quarter field goal for the final margin of victory.
Junior linebacker
Zach Malone recorded a game-best 12 tackles. Fellow junior linebacker
Andrew Jakubowsky racked up a career-high 11 tackles. Junior defensive lineman
Malik Trollinger added a sack while sophomore defensive lineman
Ryan Gatrell notched his first career sack.
Sophomore running back
JaVaughan Burrus paced the offensive effort with 87 rushing yards on just eight carries. Loftin led all CU rushers with 10 carries for 57 yards and his second touchdown of the season.
Freshman quarterback
Adam Fulton finished 10-for-27 for 74 yards and three interceptions.
Concord concludes the home portion of its schedule with it hosts Fairmont State 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
