ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University women's basketball team fell 85-69 to the visiting Notre Dame College Falcons in Mountain East Conference basketball action on Sunday evening.
Concord falls to 2-9 overall (1-6 MEC). Notre Dame improves to 3-9 overall, (2-5 MEC).
NDC raced out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game, but CU managed to respond by scoring 12 of the next 18 points to close the gap to two, 14-12, with 1:27 remaining in the first quarter. Senior guard
Alexis Lowery helped stop the run by the Falcons, scoring seven of Concord's 12 points during that time period.
Both teams continued to battle, with the Falcons leading by as many as 10 before a basket by junior forward
Heather Chapman, a layup by senior guard
Olivia Morgan, and a jump shot by junior guard
Lindsey Overbey helped Concord to cut the deficit to five entering halftime, trailing 35-30.
The two teams combined for 22 turnovers in the first half.
Concord started the second half strong, taking a 38-37 lead after junior center
Alley Odell converted a layup in the lane with 8:24 left in the third period. The two teams continued to trade baskets until the five minute mark of the quarter, after NDC went on a 9-0 run to open up a 13-point lead with 3:27 to go in the third.
Another three pointer by Lowery, her third of the afternoon, helped Concord reduce the NDC lead to single digits 60-53, with 1:27 remaining in the third. NDC hit a shot late in the third to garner a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Notr eDame pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 16-point win.
Lowery finished with 28 points, a career-high. Lowery also finished six-for-six from behind the arc, the second time she has hit six threes in a game. Lowery's six three pointers without a miss are the second-most three pointers made in the country this season.
Baylee Olsen of Saint Martin's hit seven threes in a game without a miss against Holy Names earlier in the season. Overbey also reached double figures, scoring 11 points.
Concord returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on Urbana. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
