ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University women's basketball team lost 82-73 to the visiting Urbana University Blue Knights in Mountain East Conference action on Tuesday evening at the Carter Center.
Concord falls to 2-10 (1-7 MEC), while Urbana improves to 4-7 (2-6 MEC).
An energetic start to the game from both teams saw the two teams exchange baskets for the opening minutes, with neither team gaining more than a four-point advantage, with Urbana taking a 25-21 lead after the opening period.
The score continued to remain close in the second quarter, with the teams combining to score just 21 points throughout the period. The Mountain Lions cut the deficit to one on numerous occasions in the second quarter, with the latest happening after junior guard
Danielle Catron converted a jump shot to make the score 27-26 in favor of UU with 6:26 left in the first half.
Urbana went on a 10-4 run shortly afterwards to take a seven-point lead, 37-30, at halftime.
Concord started the second half strong, with back-to-back three pointers from senior guard
Alexis Lowery and Catron pulling Concord to within one once again.
The first of two free throws by Catron helped tie the game for the seventh time through three quarters. Catron's second make from the charity stripe helped CU take its second lead of the game at 53-52 with 31 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Urbana's Sylvia Hudson made a layup with five seconds left in the third quarter to give UU a 54-53 advantage heading into the fourth.
CU continued to battle with UU, taking a 57-56 lead with 8:41 to go after freshman forward
Madison May hit a jump shot.
However, UU regained the lead on its next possession after Megan Beachy made a three-point shot to give Urbana a lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
UU made free throws down the stretch to give the Blue Knights a nine-point win.
Catron posted a season-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while junior guard
Lindsey Overbey also notched double figures, scoring 12 points, nine of those in the second half.
Concord's bench outscored UU 38-2. The game featured six lead changes and seven ties overall.
Concord travels to the northern panhandle of West Virginia for a two-game road swing against Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty on Saturday and Monday. The Mountain Lions will take on Wheeling Jesuit first, with a 1 p.m. tip scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
