Concord Bests Findlay 2-1 for First Win of Season

FINDLAY, Ohio-  The Concord University men's soccer team used a pair of goals by junior midfielder Max Simpson to defeat the University of Findlay 2-1 in nonconference action Sunday afternoon.

The win moves CU to 1-1 on the season, while UF falls to 1-1 with the defeat.

The Mountain Lions struck early in the 19th minute after Simpson placed a shot in the upper right corner from a cross by junior midfielder Mohamadou Coulibaly. The shot proved to be the only shot of the first half for either team.

Findlay responded after the break as UF's Josh Burton converted a chance in the middle of the box to even the game at one in the 56th minute.

However, ten minutes later CU regained the lead for good after Simpson fired a shot that deflected off of a Findlay defender and into the back of the net in the 66th minute.  The goal proved enough as sophomore goalkeeper Michael Adedigba would save Findlay's last attempt on goal in the 81st minute.

Overall, CU outshot the Oilers 5-4, with Simpson providing four of the shots on goal. Freshman forward Sam Ashton mustered Concord's other attempt on frame. The Concord defense managed to hold the Oilers to just two shots on target.

The Mountain Lions return home to kick off Mountain East Conference play when they host Wheeling Jesuit on September 6 at 4:00 p.m.
