ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell 3-2 to Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference play as it was unable to erase an early two-goal deficit.
Wheeling Jesuit's Aitor de Heredia scored two goals in the first 26 minutes of the match to put the Cardinals (2-1) up 2-0. However, Concord (1-2) would not be deterred as the Mountain Lions used a goal from freshman forward
Sam Ashton as he found the back of the net with less than a minute left in the first half.
de Heredia finished off his hat trick with a penalty kick in the 63
rd minute. But once again, CU had answer as freshman defender
Pedro Bassin headed in a goal off a corner kick from junior midfielder
Michael D'Angelo to cut the WJU lead to 3-2 with 16 minutes left in the game.
Over the dying minutes of the contest, the Mountain Lions were unable to put a shot on goal as Concord fell by one.
Along with D'Angelo, freshman midfielder
Yacouba Issa Traore and freshman midfielder
Beau Simpson had assists for the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Adedigba recorded one save for Concord.
Wheeling Jesuit owned a narrow advantage (12-11) in total shots while the Mountain Lions had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
After three games in five days, CU will have a break in action until Sunday when it host Shepherd 3:00 p.m. at Anderson Field. Â
