ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to the University of Charleston Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference play.
A free kick that wrapped inside of the post from Charleston's Ida Garberg was the difference in the game.
The Golden Eagles (4-1-2, 4-0-1 MEC) put five shots on goal in the first half that forced CU's sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Simpkins to make the saves to keep the game scoreless at the intermission. The lone shot for CU (3-3-1, 3-2-1 MEC) in the first half was off the foot of sophomore forward
Pilar Elias in the 37
th minute.
The first action of the second half came when the Mountain Lions committed a foul just outside of the penalty area. Garberg stepped up to the ball from the left side and curled a ball inside the near post for the game's only goal.
Over the final 30 minutes of the contest, Concord had one shot coming from freshman forward
Megan Walsh.
CU also had a late chance at goal on a corner kick from freshman midfielder
Karley Poff, but the Charleston defense was able to clear it away in the 87
th minute.
The Golden Eagles owned a 17-2 advantage in total shots while holding a narrow 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Simpkins finished with seven saves.
Concord starts a three-game road trip 3:00 p.m. Wednesday against West Liberty.
