URBANA, Ohio- The Concord University women's soccer team defeated Urbana 1-0 on the road in Mountain East Conference action on Thursday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions improve to 3-1-1 on the season, while Urbana falls to 0-5.
After a fast start by Urbana in which they outshot the Mountain Lions 5-0 in the first 15 minutes, Concord finally managed its first attempt at goal when junior midfielder
Micharae Thompson fired a shot wide right of the goal. Urbana continued to pile on the pressure after that with three more shots from the Blue Knights forcing sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Simpkins into two more saves.
However, CU succeeded in finding the net first when
Megan Walsh was first to react after junior defender
Sarah Akers struck a free kick that Walsh managed to put home the rebound in the 36th minute.
Concord used the goal to gain some momentum in the first half as sophomore forward
Pilar Elias had a shot blocked before Thompson hit a shot over the bar a minute later.
UU stepped the pressure up once again at the start of the second half as Monica Tenorio had a shot go high in the 51
st minute before the Blue Knights attempted three other shots over a seven minute span that were either blocked or wide of the goal.
CU got off a shot in the 73
rd minute when Akers had her attempt blocked.
UU managed only two more shots for the last 15 minutes of the game as Kobi Bryant forced Simpkins to make one final save in the 77
th minute and the Concord defense helped to block out a shot by Savannah Thomas in the 81
st minute.
Overall, the Mountain Lions were outshot 17-6, with UU also holding an advantage in shots on goal. Walsh's goal was the only shot on target for the Mountain Lions over the 90 minutes. Simpkins helped extend Concord's scoreless streak to 339 minutes, making eight saves in net for CU.
Concord's defense also managed to block three UU attempts at goal.
Concord will return home when they face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
