Concord Plays Shepherd to Scoreless Tie

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team played Shepherd to a scoreless tie, 0-0, in Mountain East Conference action Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Both the Mountain Lions and SU are now 2-1-1 on the season. CU is 2-0-1 in conference play while Shepherd 1-1-1 against MEC foes.
CU peppered the goal to the tune of 20 shots.

In the 15th minute of the game, freshman midfielder Karley Poff just missed the goal as a knuckling ball sailed over the head of Shepherd goalkeeper Kelsey Rhoderick.
Later in the half, Poff and sophomore forward Pilar Elias forced Rhoderick to keep the match scoreless in the first 30 minutes.

Another shot in the 36th minute off the head of freshman forward Megan Walsh just missed the net as CU continued to apply pressure into the intermission.

The Mountain Lions fired off 10 of 20 shots in the first 45 minutes, but could not sneak one past Rhoderick.

After 90 minutes, the contest headed for overtime.

Perhaps the best scoring chance for the Mountain Lions came eight minutes into the first overtime as junior back/midfielder Sarah Akers came within a foot of notching the game-winner on a header from a corner kick from Poff, but again the ball was just off the mark.

The Rams threatened with their own chance early in the second overtime after a foul on Concord just outside the penalty area. However, sophomore goalkeeper Emily Simpkins turned away the free kick from SU's Regan Stout.

Sophomore defender Alison Backel had the final attempt on goal in the game with just over two minutes left in overtime as her curling shot from 25 yards away fell into the arms of Rhoderick.

Elias and Walsh fired two shots on goal for the Mountain Lions while Backel, sophomore midfielder Taylor Life and Poff each had one.

Simpkins had four saves in goal for Concord and extended her shutout streak to 249:25 minutes.

Concord owned a 4-3 edge in corners while outshooting the Rams 20-5 in total shot and 7-4 on shots on target.

CU continues MEC play at Urbana 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
