ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team fell in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Glenville State Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field by scores of 7-1 and 17-14.
Game 1: Glenville State 7 – Concord 1
Glenville State scored five combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to turn a slim 2-1 edge into a commanding 7-1 lead on its way to the win.
After GSC scored two runs in the top of the second, freshman infielder
Brett Simmons answered with a run-scoring single that plated sophomore catcher
Paul Williams in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The score remained the same until the Pioneers broke through with three runs in the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth to stretch the advantage to 7-1.
Sophomore outfielder
Andy Szamski led the offense with three hits.
Senior pitcher
Chris Kelly (5-5) took the loss as he allowed five runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings while striking out three.
Game 2: Glenville State 17 – Concord 14
The night cap turned into a slugfest between the two teams with GSC erasing a 14-12 ninth-inning deficit to win 17-14.
CU jumped on Glenville State early by scoring eight runs over the first three innings including five in the second. In the frame, Williams notched a two-RBI double to start the scoring while senior infielder
Brad Sullivan and sophomore infielder
Chad Frazier hit back-to-back RBI doubles to conclude the scoring.
After three innings, Concord led Glenville State 8-1.
Entering the sixth, the Mountain Lions were still in front 9-5, but Glenville State quickly changed that as it scored six runs to take an 11-9 advantage. However, the CU bats answered by plating five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 14-11.
The biggest hit of the inning for Concord was a bases-loaded single from senior outfielder
Andrew Seigel that scored two runs.
The Pioneers plated a run in the seventh to make the score 14-12 before the ninth-inning rally moved them in front, 17-14.
After giving up the lead, Concord was able to get the game-tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but wasn't able to get any closer as it fell 17-14.
Seigel and Sullivan, the top two hitters in the lineup, combined to go 7-for-10 with six RBI as each player drove in three runs.
Williams also had three RBI with two hits. Senior infielder

Trevor Wiersma also had multi-hit games for the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore pitcher
Reece Edwards (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief as he gave up three runs (one earned) in relief in the ninth inning. Freshman pitcher
Troy Beckner went 5.1 innings as gave up six earned runs and struck out five.
CU and Glenville State continue their series 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
