WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Concord University baseball won one of three games against Winston-Salem State in non-conference play over the weekend.
CU won the first game 5-3 before falling 4-2 and 6-5 versus the Rams. The Mountain Lions are now 3-8 on the season while WSSU improves to 8-11.
Game 1: Concord 5 – Winston-Salem State 3Concord used a four run fourth inning to gain a lead it would not relinquish.
The rally started with a double from redshirt freshman infielder
Trevor Wiersma who scored later in the inning on an RBI groundout from senior infielder
Holt Cassada. Freshman infielder
Brett Simmons' RBI single plated single while senior infielder
Brad Sullivan and sophomore catcher
Paul Williams also had run-scoring hits in the frame.
After two innings, Concord led 4-2.
The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the fourth as senior outfielder
Andrew Seigel brought around sophomore infielder
Chad Frazier. WSSU scored one more run, but could not get any closer as Concord secured a 5-3 win.
Senior pitcher
Chris Kelly earned his second win of the season as he allowed two earned runs in four innings. Junior pitcher
Eli Flynn picked up his second save of the season by recording the last nine outs.
Seigel and Sullivan were each 2-for-4 with one RBI in the game.
Game 2: Winston-Salem State 4 –Concord 2Four runs by the Rams in the first inning was deep of a hole for the Mountain Lions to climb out of.
Concord's comeback bid started in the seventh inning as Frazier drew a walk to start the inning and later scored on an RBI single from Seigel. Sullivan knocked an RBI base hit into center field that brought home Seigel. With the tying run on first base, Winston-Salem State escaped the jam on a sharp lineout to center field by redshirt freshman catcher / first baseman
Jordan Clark.
Once again, Seigel and Sullivan led the offense with two hits. Additionally, Cassada registered two hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Damon Frazier was charged with the loss by going 6.0 innings and allowed four runs.
Game 3: Winston-Salem State 6 – Concord 5A walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth for Winston-Salem State was the ultimate difference in the game.
Facing a 5-3 deficit in its next –to-last at-bat, the Mountain Lions tied the game in the eighth inning.
With two outs in the inning, sophomore outfielder
Andy Szamski and Wiersma reached on a back-to-back doubles before Clark ripped a double down the left field line to plate Szamski and Wiersma and tie the game.
The Mountain Lions could not overtake WSSU in the frame though as Winston-Salem hit a bases-loaded single to end the game.
Fraizer, Szamski, Wiersma and William each had two hits in the game.

Reed McNeer was tagged with the loss for CU.
