WALNUT CREEK, N.C.- The Concord University softball team earned two victories over Wayne State University and Millersville 3-2 and 8-0 respectively to open the Shaw Softball Challenge on Friday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions move to 4-2 on the season.
Game 1: Concord 3 - Wayne State 2Concord faced a stiff test from the Warriors in the first game, with WSU holding a 2-0 lead on the Mountain Lions until the fifth inning when
Alyssa Morris hit her third home run of the season which also scored freshman pitcher
Aarron Ward to bring the Mountain Lions back to 2-2.
The game remained knotted at that score, and would need extra innings to decide the outcome. Â
Concord would get a chance in the bottom of the 10th inning.
With runnes on the corners after an intential walk to Morris, freshman pitcher / outfielder
Abby Beatty stepped up for her second hit of the season to drive home junior shortstop
Alayna Furr for the game-winning run. Senior pitcher
Allie Reid and Ward combined to allow just seven hits through ten innings with Ward earning the win.
Game 2: Concord 8 - Millersville 0In the second game, Concord cruised to an 8-0 win over the Marauders. The Mountain Lions scored three runs each in the first three innings, and also did well defensively as junior pitcher
Sarah Herndon allowed just one hit through her five innings of work.Â
Morris launched another home run in the second inning to bring her total to four on the season. Seven players registered a hit, with Morris driving in three runs, while sophomore outfielder/shortstop
Jessica Burney, junior outfielder
Lauren Lewis, freshman infielder
Kylie Kent, and Ward each drove in a run.
Concord returns to action today, as the Mountain Lions will take on Virginia State at 4 p.m. before playing Shaw at 6 p.m. Â Â Â Â Â Â
