ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University softball team continued its recent run of succes as it picked up two wins over Mountain East Conference South Divisional foe West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at the CU Softball Complex.
Concord improves to 16-12 (5-5 MEC), while West Virginia State falls to 18-9 (3-5 MEC).
Game 1: Concord 4 - West Virginia State 3West Virginia State controlled much of the first six innings of the first game, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before a rally in the seventh plated all four CU runs for the walk-off win.
Concord scattered five hits across the first six innings, but would wait to do its damage in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior infielder
Alayna Furr started the inning off with a single up the middle, before senior catcher
Alyssa Morris would hit a single of her own.
A third consecutive single by sophomore catcher / first baseman by
Nicole Neri plated Furr.
Junior outfielder/pitcher
Sarah Herndon singled in Stahl, and an error by West Virginia State allowed Morris to score, tying the game at 3-3.
With Herndon now on third, freshman
Kylie Kent banged a two-strike pitch back up the middle to plate Herndon and give Concord the walk-off win in dramatic fashion.
For the game, Furr was 2-for-4 with a run scored while in the circle Herndon (6-9) gave up three runs (two earned) in the complete game victory.
Game 2: Concord 3 - West Virginia State 0 Concord scored all three of the game's runs in the first inning en route to a shutout victory, 3-0.
After junior outfielder
Lauren Lewis singled to start the first inning, Morris doubled home the Kearneysville, West Virginia native to score the first run of the game. Kent would then drive in two runs later in the inning to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead after one.
The three runs would be all the Mountain Lions would need as freshman pitcher
Abby Beatty was superb in the circle for CU. Beatty gave up just three hits in a complete game shutout effort to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay. The win for Beatty moves her to 4-0 on the season.
Morris finished 3-for-6 on the day, while Kent added three RBI over the two games to round out her total at 11 for the season.
The complete game was Beatty's second of the season.
Concord will have a quick turnaround against the Yellow Jackets, as it travels to Institute, West Virginia State on Wednesday for a doubleheader against WVSU. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
