Concord Records Two Wins Over West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -  The Concord University softball team is now on a five-game winning streak after sweeping the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets for the second time in five days by scores of 1-0 and 7-1.
 
Concord's record improves to 18-12 (7-5 MEC), while WVSU falls to 18-14 overall (3-7 MEC). 
 
Game 1: Concord 1 - West Virginia State 0
A second-inning RBI single from sophomore third baseman Alycea Watson proved to be the game-winning run for the Mountain Lions while junior pitcher / outfielder Sarah Herndon silenced the WVSU bats for her fifth shutout of the season and first seven-inning shutout since March 8 versus Bluefield State.

The single from Watson drove home senior second baseman / outfielder Kristen Rose, and was one of only four hits for the Mountain Lions through the first game. Herndon took control for the rest of the game, only allowing five hits to help pick up her seventh win of the season. 

After giving up a double to put the tying run on second in the bottom of the sixth inning, Herndon forced a groundout to end the inning and secure the win for Concord. For the game, Herndon struck out two Yellow Jackets, and also kept the ball on the ground as all but three of the 21 outs were either strikeouts or groundouts.
 
Watson finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, while senior catcher Alyssa Morris, junior shortstop Alayna Furr, and Rose each tallied hits. 
 
Game 2 Concord 7 - West Virginia State 1
Concord used five runs in the third inning to seal the sweep over West Virginia State.

Furr and junior outfielder Lauren Lewis started the scoring with an RBI each to drive in freshman infielder Kylie Kent and freshman outfielder Lindsey Stahl, respectively, before Morris launched a three-run home run over the right field fence to make the score 5-0. Concord added two insurance runs in the seventh with one run scoring on an error and Morris driving in another run on a base hit to put the game out of reach. 
 
Morris finished 2-for-4, driving in four runs and hitting her sixth home run of the season.  Lewis recorded a 1-for-4 effort at the plate and tallied two RBI. Freshman pitcher / outfielder Abby Beatty improved to a perfect 5-0 as she gave up just one run on five hits in six innings. Freshman pitcher / utility Aarron Ward registered the final three outs to halt a comeback attempt by WVSU.
 
Concord's doubleheader versus King originally scheduled for March 31 has been moved to April 13 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.  Concord's next home game will be on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts West Liberty at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
