Concord Drops Two Games at Notre Dame

AVON, Ohio – The Concord University baseball team lost a doubleheader to Notre Dame by identical scores of 4-2 in Mountain East Conference play at All Pro Freight Field Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Notre Dame 4 – Concord 2
Three runs by the Falcons (10-10, 4-2 MEC) put NDC ahead for good in the third inning as it went on to win by two runs.

Concord (8-14, 2-4 MEC) got on the board first, however, as senior outfielder Andrew Seigel crossed the plate on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Andy Szamski. In the third inning, CU added to its lead as Seigel once again touched home, this time on a sacrifice fly by senior infielder Brad Sullivan.

NDC scored three runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame to overtake Concord. The Falcons tacked on another run in the fifth to lead 4-2.

In the final two CU at-bats, only one base runner was able to reach for the Mountain Lions as they dropped game one.

Seigel was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Szamski while 1-for-3 with one RBI. NDC's Jake Welch limited CU to just three hits in his complete game.

Meanwhile, senior pitcher Chris Kelly (3-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits while fanning three hitters in six innings.

Game 2: Notre Dame 4 – Concord 2
NDC scored the final two runs of the game in the seventh inning as it went on to win by the same margin in the nightcap as it did in the first game.

The Falcons scored a run each in the second and third innings, but the Mountain Lions battled back with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth.

In the fourth, sophomore infielder Chad Frazier led off the frame with his second triple of the season before the next batter, Szamski, flied out to score Frazier. The sixth-inning run came via a lead-off double from Sullivan and an RBI groundout two batters later from redshirt freshman infielder Trevor Wiersma three batters later to score Sullivan.

With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh, consecutive singles with one out by NDC broke the tie as it plated another run on an RBI groundout later in the frame to take a 4-2 advantage.

Josh Armbruster was able to retire Concord in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win for NDC.

Sullivan had two of the five CU hits while senior infielder Holt Cassada, Frazier and Wiersma each had one.

In seven career games versus Notre Dame, Szamski has at least one RBI in all seven contests.

On the mound, sophomore pitcher Damon Frazier (3-3) was charged with the loss as he tossed 6.1 innings giving up all four runs on 11 hits. Frazier also struck out three batters.

The Mountain Lions complete their Ohio road trip 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Urbana.
