Concord Second Half Rally Falls Short Versus UVa.-Wise

ATHENS, W.Va- After jumping out to an early lead, the Concord University women's basketball team fell 92-71 to the visiting UVa.-Wise Cavaliers in the final game of the regular season at the Carter Center.

Concord falls to 5-23 on the season (3-19 MEC), while UVa.-Wise improves to 12-14 overall (8-14 MEC). 

Concord came out neck-and-neck with the Cavaliers, with the score knotted at 23 after the first quarter.  CU would then use a 10-2 run to extend their lead to eight, 33-25, with 7:36 remaining in the first half.  Junior guards Alexis Lowery and Olivia Morgan combined for the 10 points during the run. However, UVa.-Wise would respond to end the second half, going on a 14-5 run of their own to take a  a one-point lead at the break, 39-38.

UVa.-Wise started to pull away in the third quarter, extending their lead to 11 after outscoring the Mountain Lions by 10 in the third quarter.  Concord made a run in the fourth quarter, with senior forward Kylie Molisee making a layup to cut the deficit to five with eight minutes remaining.  However, UVa.-Wise would use a 12-0 run to propel the Cavaliers to a 17-point lead and ultimately decide the outcome, 92-71.

UVa.-Wise held a pivotal advantage in bench scoring, outscoring the Mountain Lions 32-15 in that category.  The Cavaliers also shot over 51 percent from the field, and 40 percent from three-point range. 

Concord was led by sophomore guard Danielle Catron, who scored 16 points on the day.  She also added seven rebounds.  The Mountain Lions also posted three other double figure scores in Morgan, Lowery, and Molisee.  Each player finished with 12 points, with Molisee adding eight rebounds in her 50th appearance for the Mountain Lions and final appearance in the Carter Center. 

Concord will travel to Fairmont State for a 7 p.m tipoff in the first round of the Mountain East Conference tournament on Tuesday.
