Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Concord Drops Game to Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.Va- The Concord University women's basketball team fell 71-52 at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup.

Concord falls to 5-19 on the season (3-15 MEC), while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 21-3 overall (16-2 MEC).

Concord and WJU started the game off slowly, with Wheeling Jesuit reaching double figures after Chenelle Moore converted a layup to make the game 11-8 in favor of the Cardinals with 1:21 left in the first quarter. The two teams were close early on, with Concord holding an 8-6 advantage, but Wheeling Jesuit would go on an 20-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 26-10 lead with 6:59 remaining in the first half.

Concord attempted to close the gap in the third quarter, as junior guard Olivia Morgan made a three-pointer followed by fellow junior guard Alexis Lowery converting an old-school three point play to trim WJU's lead to 10 with 5:26 left in the third quarter.  However, Concord would not reduce the deficit to any closer than that, and WJU continued to make shots in the second half to stave off any attempt at a Concord comeback.

The Cardinals held the advantage in points in the paint, 32-16, and also held a sizeable advantage in 2nd chance points 14-0.

Sophomore guard Danielle Catron led all scorers with 22 points, and also shot well from the field, going 8-for-15 overall and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.  Lowery also scored in double figures for the Mountain Lions, adding 10 points.  She also chipped in three assists. Freshman guard Emily Boothe added seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Cardinals were led by Mariah Callen and Kylie Frizell, who each chipped in 18 points.

Concord will return home on Thursday when they host Urbana University in a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup.
