HICKORY, N.C. – The Concord University softball team lost two games to Lenoir-Rhyne Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
The two defeats even CU's record to 2-2 this season while L-R moves to 6-0.
Game 1: Lenoir-Rhyne 8 – Concord 1A five-run fifth for Lenoir-Rhyne was too much for Concord to overcome as the Bears won game one.
Senior catcher
Alyssa Morris blasted her first home run of the season, a solo shot, to start the game before L-R tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
The game remained tied through the next three innings with senior pitcher
Allie Reid working out jams in both the third and fourth innings. However, Lenoir-Rhyne hit two home runs in the bottom of the fifth, a two-run homer and a three-run shot, to stretch its lead to 6-1.
The Bears added two runs in the sixth to win 8-1.
Reid (1-1) was tagged with the loss as she threw six innings giving up five earned runs and striking out three.
Morris and Reid each went 2-for-3 from the plate with Morris adding a double in addition to her home run.
Game 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 13 – Concord 5CU was unable to rally out of an early 8-0 deficit as it fell in the nightcap.
The Bears jumped out to an 8-0 advantage in the second inning with two runs in the first and six in the second inning.
Concord was not deterred by the L-R hitting as they notched a five spot in the third inning.
Morris began the inning by hitting another solo home run as junior outfielder
Lauren Lewis produced a run-scoring single three batters later scoring freshman second baseman / outfielder
Lindsey Stahl.
Lewis and Reid also crossed home plate as junior pitcher / outfielder
Sarah Herndon drove them in on an RBI single. Herndon came around to score herself on a double by junior catcher
Carly DiVirgilio. After the extended rally, CU trailed 8-5.
Lenoir-Rhyne added a single run in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth as Concord could not draw any closer to loss 13-5.
Lewis registered a multi-hit game, 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. DiVirgilio, Morris and Stahl were all 1-for-2 while Herndon was 1-for-1 with two RBI.
Herndon (1-1) took the loss for Concord.
The Mountain Lions will have an extended break, hosting Carson-Newman Feb. 29.
