ATHENS, W.VA- The Concord University women's basketball team was handed a narrow defeat, 65-61, to Winston-Salem State in a non-conference matchup on Sunday at the Carter Center.
Concord falls to 1-7 on the year, while Winston-Salem State improves to 4-6.Â
After the Rams took an early 10-3 lead in the first quarter, baskets from junior guard

Madison May helped CU respond with an 11-1 run to take a 14-11 lead with 2:55 left in the first quarter. Â
The two teams continued to exchange baskets in the second quarter, with the Rams once again threatening to pull away after they took a 28-21 lead with 3:15 left in the half. Concord once again came back after junior guard
Lindsey Overbey sank a three-pointer and senior guard
Olivia Morgan converted a layup to cut WSSU's lead to 30-27 at the break.Â
Winston-Salem State came out strong in the second half, outscoring Concord 18-8 over the third period to take a 48-35 lead with one quarter to go.Â
In the fourth, Winston-Salem State led by as many as 17 and had a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 3:50 left on the game clock.
However, the Mountain Lions stormed back, forcing five turnovers over the next three minutes to cut WSSU's lead to just two at 60-58 with 20 seconds remaining by way of a 13-0 run. May scored six of Concord's points during the spurt, while Overbey used a strong drive between several Ram defenders to bring CU within two.Â
Winston-Salem State managed to hold off the Mountain Lions after converting a three-point play and making free throws down the stretch to
claim a 65-61 victory.
Overbey paced the Mountain Lions with 16 points, a season high. CU had three other players in double figures with Boothe (13), Catron (13), and May (10). May and Overbey each added six rebounds, while Boothe added five rebounds and four assists.
Concord returns to action on New Year's Eve for an exhibition at Radford University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
