Concord Beats Charleston in Straight Sets

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team earned a marquee win Saturday as it swept the University of Charleston in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

The Mountain Lions improves to 17-13 overall and 8-6 in the conference while UC drops to 23-11 overall and 11-3 against conference foes.

Behind five kills from sophomore middle hitter Brooke Heck in the first set, CU won the game 25-18 to grab a 1-0 lead in the match. The Mountain Lions were able to pull away from the Golden Eagles in the middle part of the set. Leading 15-13, Concord outscored Charleston 10-3 the rest of the way. Four different Mountain Lions, freshman middle hitter Emily Ellis, Heck, redshirt freshman outside hitter Ellie Lawrence and freshman setter Jenna Mounts had kills in the run.

The early part of the second set was nip and tuck, and this time Concord used a late surge to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. Tied 21-21, Heck and Lawrence each had a kill and UC committed two errors as the Mountain Lions won 25-21.

In the third set, Concord got out to an 8-2 lead with Lawrence notching two kills in the spurt. Still holding onto an eight-point lead, 22-14, the Golden Eagles scored six of the next seven points to close to within 23-20. However, just a couple of points later, Ellis ended the match to give Concord the straight sets victory over Charleston.

Heck and Lawrence each finished with 11 kills. Heck hit .381 while Lawrence hit .290. Junior setter Casey Mandeville added 23 assists and sophomore libero Erin Shannon finished with 16 digs.

Ellis added five kills and five blocks.

Saturday was the first time the Mountain Lions beat UC in head coach Kate Southcott's tenure at Concord which dates back to 2009. Additionally, the Maroon and Gray won its 10th home match of the season, a feat that hadn't been accomplished since 2011.

Concord faces Shepherd 7:00 p.m. Friday night in MEC action at the Carter Center.
