Concord Wins in Four Sets Over West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball picked up a four-set victory over West Virginia State Friday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.

CU improves to 16-13 overall and 7-6 in conference play while West Virginia State falls to 6-19 overall and 3-10 against league foes.

Concord won the first set 25-18 as four different Mountain Lions, junior middle hitter Alexis Elliott, redshirt freshman outside hitter Ellie Lawrence, sophomore outside hitter Alexi Pranckus and junior outside hitter Lisette Roldan, each had at least two kills in the set.

Balance was the theme of the night for the Mountain Lions as four players, Ellis, sophomore middle hitter Brooke Heck, Lawrence and Pranckus tied for the team lead in kills with eight.

The Yellow Jackets took the second set 25-21 as a late CU rally came up just short.

However, Concord grabbed momentum with a convincing third set win, 25-14. The Mountain Lions opened the set on a 12-4 run as West Virginia State committed six attack errors in the spurt. Ellis added two kills as well. After the Yellow Jackets crept back to within 14-9, CU scored seven of the next nine points to regain control and win the set by 11.

With Concord up 2-1 in the match, the fourth set started tight but Concord pulled away from WVSU to win 25-16. Holding a three-point edge, 16-13, the Mountain Lions held West Virginia State to three points the rest of the match while scoring nine of their own.

Ellis and Pranckus each had a kill in the final nine points while Pranckus also added a service ace.

Along with eight kills, Ellis and Heck added six blocks each with three of Ellis' being of the solo variety.

Pranckus tallied 10 digs, just missing a double-double with the eight kills.

Sophomore libero Erin Shannon recorded 12 digs. Junior setter Casey Mandeville handed out 15 assists while freshman setter Jenna Mounts added 13 assists.

The Mountain Lions host Charleston 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Carter Center.
