Concord Prepares for Two-Game MEC Swing

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University men's basketball team resumes Mountain East Conference play 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Glenville State at the Carter Center before traveling to West Virginia Wesleyan 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
The Mountain Lions are 4-2 this season with a 1-1 conference mark.

Glenville State is searching for its first win as it sports an 0-3 record.

WVWC is 2-3 this season and 0-2 in the league.

WINNING ON THE ROAD
CU notched a 71-59 win at Bluefield State Monday night as it held the Blues to 37.5 percent (24-for-64) from the the field in the victory.

Concord was led in scoring by senior guard Aaron Miller who had 16 points.

Senior guards Michael Sanchez and Cam Shannon each posted season high in points with 13 and 10, respectively.

Junior guard BJ Hamlet also finished in double figures with 10 points off the bench.

Senior forward Stephen Thompson became the first CU player to grab 10 rebounds this season while adding eight points.

Thompson also rejected three shots on the night to set a single game career-high.

The Beckley, West Virginia native became the first Mountain Lion to have three blocks in a game since Terry Hopewell did against West Liberty in the MEC Tournament last season.

TURNING THEM AWAY
Concord held Bluefield State to under 40 percent shooting in both halves of Monday's contest.

The Blues shot 35.5 percent in the first half and 39.4 in the second 20 minutes.

It was the first time the Mountain Lions held an opponent to under 40 percent in both halves of a game since the MEC Championship last season when Notre Dame shot 39.4 percent in the first half and 30 percent in the second.

Opponents have also had a hard time at gaining a second look at the bucket this season versus the Mountain Lions.

CU's foes are only averaging 8.5 second-chances points per game. A season ago, Concord allowed 10.7 second-chance points per game.

BENCH ENERGY
The Concord bench has come up big in the season's first month, averaging 20.1 points per game, six more than last season.

CU's reserves have combined to score at least 18 points in five straight games including a season-high 39 versus West Virginia State.

Sophomore guard Tommy Bolte has had two double-digit scoring game off the bench (13 vs. Winston-Salem State, 11 vs. West Virginia State) while freshman guard Pierce Mowery netted 14 points off the bench against West Virginia State.

Last season versus Glenville State, CU's bench scored 20 points in both contests. In the first meeting, Shannon provided nine points while Bolte added five. In the second meeting, Bolte scored eight points. Junior forward Babe Murphy and Shannon each had six for Concord.

SHOOTING THE ROCK AGAINST GSC
The Mountain Lions defeated Glenville State103-79 at home last season before downing the Pioneers 86-78 on the road.

The Mountain Lions combined to shoot 56 percent from the field (70-for-125) against GSC.

Additionally, Concord put together two halves of 60 percent or better shooting against Glenville State last season. In the first half of the home win, the Maroon and Gray hit 60.7 percent (17-for-28) of its shots, and in the road triumph CU connected on 62.1 percent (18-for-29) of its attempts in the second half.

Furthermore, Miller is averaging 18.2 points per game in his last four contests against Glenville State and is shooting 47.9 percent from the field that includes an 11-for-19 effort over the last two games.

Both Hamlet and Shannon's career highs have come against Glenville State with each scoring 25 points. Shannon did so January 25, 2014. Hamlet hit seven three-pointers and scored 25 points December 3, 2013 against the Pioneers.

DOWN TO THE WIRE WITH WESLEYAN
The last two meetings between Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan have been decided by one possession.

Additionally, five of the last eight games between the teams have been decided by two possessions or less.

Last year at the Carter Center, it took three overtimes before the Bobcats bagged a 90-89 win.

Shannon scored 11 points off the bench the first time around against WVWC.

At the beginning of February last season, Sanchez canned a deep three-pointer with three seconds left to lift the Mountain Lions to a 65-64 win against West Virginia Wesleyan.

All 10 of Sanchez's points came in the second half. Shannon once again added 11 points off the bench.

SCOUTING GLENVILLE STATE
The Pioneers lost both conference games this season to Fairmont State and Shepherd.

Jon Dunmyer is averaging 20.3 points per game for Glenville State while shooting 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from three-point range.

Senior forward Brett Morris is posting numbers just shy of a double-double by scoring 15 points per game and collecting 8.3 rebounds per game.

GSC is allowing 102 points per game.

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
The Bobcats snapped a brief two-game losing streak by defeating Salem International 77-64 on Thanksgiving Eve.

West Virginia Wesleyan is last in the MEC in scoring at 63.8 points per game, but is giving up the fewest points per game at 63.4.

Four players are averaging at least 10 points per game led by Mo Berchie (12.4). Kevin Kangni (11.0), Fred Brondsted (10.4) and Luke Layhew (10.0) are also notching double-digits scoring.

WVWC is shooting 29 percent from three-point range this season. The Bobcats will play UVa.-Wise on the road Wednesday night before hosting CU.
