WISE, Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell in a five-set match for the first time this season as CU lost to UVa.-Wise Tuesday night at the Prior Center in Mountain East Conference action.
Previously, the Mountain Lions (15-13, 6-6 MEC) were 6-0 in five-set match this season.
CU won the first set 26-24 as freshman middle hitter
Emily Ellis had six kills in the set including one to give CU a 25-24 edge before it closed out the set on a ball handling error against UVa.-Wise (7-22, 5-7 MEC).
While the next two sets were tight, the Cavaliers came away winnings, 25-23, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
However, Concord battled back in a marathon fourth set that the Mountain Lions won 29-27. CU erased a 23-20 deficit in the set and never led until 28-27. A kill each from Ellis, redshirt freshman outside hitter
Ellie Lawrence and sophomore outside hitter
Alexi Pranckus in the final nine points helped the Mountain Lions force a decisive fifth set.
After a Lawrence kill, Concord grabbed an 8-5 lead. But, UVa.-Wise scored five of the next six points in the game to grab the lead and eventually the set and match.
Sophomore middle hitter
Brooke Heck tallied 15 kills while Ellis tallied a career-best 14 kills while adding eight blocks. Lawrence and Pranckus each had 10 kills with Pranckus notching a double-double by registering 11 digs.

Erin Shannon went over 30 digs for the fifth time this season with 32 at UVa.-Wise. Junior setter
Casey Mandeville collected 28 assists, and freshman setter
Jenna Mounts handed a career-high 25 assists.
The Mountain Lions continue MEC play 7:00 p.m. Friday night as they welcome West Virginia State to the Carter Center.
